* Completed Bachelors degree required.
* Must have completed major course work in Chemistry, Biological Sciences, Mathematics, Physics, Environmental Health and Safety, Occupational Health or Industrial Hygiene); OR courseworkin other directly-related fields, including or supplemented by at least 24 semester hours of study from among the following (or closely related) disciplines: Environmental Studies, Safety, Occupational Health, Industrial Hygiene, Physics, Chemistry, Biological Sciences, and Engineering.
* Completed Masters degree a plus; with major course work in Safety, Occupational Health, Industrial Hygiene, Environmental Health and Safety, Human Factors, Accident Investigation, Occupational Medicine, Toxicology, Public Health, Engineering, Industrial Psychology and 10+ years of equivalent specialized experience in or related to Environmental, Safety and Occupational Health that provided the specific knowledge, skills and abilities to perform successfully the duties of the position.
* Must have 10+ years experience in EHS systems and general management.
* Must have solid knowledge of Environmental, Safety, Product Safety, Industrial Hygiene, and Emergency Response with regard to manufacturing and R&D environments.
* Must have a good knowledge of national and regional regulations.
* Must have at least 10 years EHS experience in a manufacturing, pharmaceutical company or other related industry.
* Expertise either in construction or general industry as it applies to analyzing work processes and conditions, identifying and eliminating/controlling safety and occupational health hazards.
* Knowledge of OSHA standards relating to construction and general industry.
* Knowledge of Environmental regulations related to Manufacturing and R&D.
* Expertise in utilization of relevant industrial hygiene and safety equipment.
* Knowledge of relevant policies, procedures and strategies to promote effective local, state or federal environmental health and safety operations for the protection of people, property and the environment
The Associate Director of Environmental Health and Safety (EHS) for the West Coast will report directly to the Head of Global EHS/Lab Services. This position is responsible for leading, developing and implementing EHS programs and will direct EHS/Lab Services on the West Coast, providing general direction and review in various functional areas, groups, and/or operations globally as requested, in order to address compliance issues and implement best practices as required. The position will provide leadership to a staff of qualified professionals who review key EHS processes (including but not limited to environmental compliance, workplace safety and potential exposure, MSDS development and distribution, employee training, chemical and biological waste disposal, EHS program reviews, and inspections, etc.) for consistency and adherence to occupational health and safety laws, regulations, standards and ordinances in the countries in which we do business. This position works closely with global functional leadership to ensure an integrated and collaborative framework including the office of Corporate Compliance, Global Supply Chain, Research & Development, and Global Human Resources. The information maintained by this group is critical for Celgene's Compliance, Supply Chain and R&D/Clinical Bioresearch Business and is a main source of compliance data.
In support of the above-mentioned scope and global management, Responsibilities will include, but are not limited to, the following:
1. Provide direction to EHS and Lab Services personnel as appropriate.
2. Develop, implement and maintain workflows/processes for the key EHS systems.
3. Evaluate and monitor key EHS Metrics and issues and provide gap analysis to manage environmental, health and safety matters to ensure that Celgene meets or exceeds legislative, corporate and industry requirements, as well as best practice standards.
4. Direct hazardous material management, hazardous waste management and emergency procedures, including Business Continuity Planning.
5. Participate in corporate development of methods, techniques, and evaluation criteria for projects, programs and people.
6. Create proactive approach to EHS through cross functional co-operation, communications and training.
7. Identify corrective actions arising from gap analysis to bring the Corporation into compliance with applicable codes, laws, regulations and standards and explain these measures to others.
8. Recommend measures to industrial hygienists and management to ensure maximum employee protection.
9. Participate in educational meetings to instruct employees in matters pertaining to occupational health and prevention of accidents.
10. Direct a variety of safety inspections in the workplace and effectively communicate the findings.
11. Document inspection/audit files, describe hazards in detail, propose any abatement action required.
12. Provide direction with regard to environmental emergency response compliance with regard to regional, federal, state and local regulations and best practices.
13. Minimize occupational health and safety risks throughout the organization by promoting an occupational health and safety awareness campaign to employees.
14. Analyze work processes and conditions, identifying and eliminating/controlling safety and occupational health hazards in construction, general industry.
15. Responsible for the hiring and discipline of employees within area of expertise.
16. Keep abreast of changes in relevant technology and best practices and look for opportunities to apply such changes within the organization.
17. Other duties related to the above within Celgene as a whole, as assigned.
18. Assist the Head of Environmental Health and Safety/Laboratory Services as required.
Skills/Knowledge Required:
