Blog Post: Bailout Talks Raise Fear, Stress Levels

posted Wednesday, October 1, 2008 2:32 PM

Today's economic crisis is hurting more than just American's bank accounts – it's hurting their health.  As the Fed tries for a second time to pass the $700 billion bailout, Americans are experiencing overwhelming emotions of fear, hopelessness, and frustration surrounding national and personal finances.  This financial stress begins to take an emotional and physical toll, leading to sleepless nights, short tempers, increased irritability, chronic worry, and can even affect job performance. As a result, more and more employees and family members are turning to their Employee Assistance Program for free help and services.

ACI Specialty Benefits – a top 10 employee assistance program – is reporting a major spike in financial consultation utilization among its client workforce: a 45% increase since January 2008, and an astounding 85% increase since September 2007.

"The reality is people are swimming in debt, struggling to pay the mortgage, uncertain about their future, and turning to their EAP because it's free, confidential, and personalized help," says Dr. Ann D. Clark, CEO and Founder of ACI.  The EAP provides legal and financial consultation services with licensed attorneys, CPAs and experienced financial professionals, plus counseling services for those experiencing stress, depression, relationship problems and other emotional concerns.  "While we may not be able to pay off their debt, we can certainly help manage their stress," adds Dr. Clark.

Check out the USA Today cover story, Financial fears send nation’s stress soaring – where journalist Bruce Horovitz explores the impact that the current economic crisis is having on people’s daily lives.

ACI Specialty Benefits Corporation is a global provider of EAP, Wellness, Work/Life, Concierge and Management Consulting services. Ranked #8 in the country by Business Insurance, ACI's stability and reliability are widely recognized. For more information visit http://www.acispecialtybenefits.com.

The measure, which is designed to get battered lending markets working normally again, needed 218 votes for passage.
