This past fall I traveled to
Macedonia to participate in a
Habitat for Humanity Global Village Team.
Each of the thirteen team members volunteered their time and contributed financially......and that is where the similarities pretty much end. We represented four generations, different thinking preferences, a variety of religions, multiple political views and an array of travel experience not to mention three countries!
But wait....surely everyone had the same goal? Actually, team members applied for and joined the team for very different reasons.
* Looking for the international travel experience
* Friends and/or family members were applying to be on the same team
* Life-long Habitat volunteers were looking for new ways to give back
* One was advised to participate by the company he's going to work for in the fall!
Very different motivating factors.
hmmmmm.....probably not unlike your team.......chances are the people you work with came to your organization for very different reasons.......
* Applied because of a desire to relocate to the region
* Referred by family and friends who already worked there
* Admiration of the company's mission and vision
* Opportunity to build their resume
The individuals on your team are likely not motivated by the same factors ---- and you can accomplish amazingly wonderful things with a diverse, innovative team with members that look at the world differently.
If a group as diverse as Global Village - Macedonia can collaborate to mix and haul over two ton of wet concrete using only seven buckets....well.....the possibilities for your team are unlimited.
Build the right team. Build the best leaders.
