Blog Post: Acing (either side of) the job interview

posted Monday, May 4, 2009 9:41 AM

The Job Interview.

I was going to write The Dreaded Job Interview, but it really doesn’t need to be that way, does it?

SDSU’s College of Extended Studies runs an excellent Training & Development seminar series where folks get together once a month to hear a local expert speak on a topic relevant to business today. The next meet-up is on Friday, May 8, 2009 , from 8:30-10:30 am , and Janis Whitaker, Management Trainer at JP Whitaker & Associates, will be discussing interview techniques.

Her talk is going to be aimed toward anyone working in a position that requires them to interview new potential hires, so she’s going to be outlining some techniques that will help interviewers hire the right person the first time. Her goal is to help you increase your interviewing confidence by teaching you how to:

  • Identify which skills you should be targeting,
  • Ask productive interview questions,
  • Avoid interviewing pitfalls,
  • Spot applicants’ skills and recognize their past performance, and
  • Make your final decisions.
  •

Here’s a thought, though… If you’re looking for work at the moment, and you’re being interviewed for jobs these days, it may be interesting and pretty helpful to find out what the interviewer on the other side of the desk is looking for. There are hundreds of FAQs online with basic tips and tricks for interviewing – be on time, wear deodorant, don’t talk about your exes, prepare good questions ahead of time, etc. – but they never seem to investigate the other perspective at work… how are the interviewers thinking and strategizing about this important hiring step?

So for interviewers and interviewees alike, visit the CES website for more information about their T&D Seminar series or to register for the May 8 th event. Or give them a call at (619) 594-1138.
