Blog Post: Richard Simmons- No Exercise Required!
posted Thursday, July 30, 2009 12:34 PM
When you hear the name Richard Simmons… do you think of short, striped running shorts, a flimsy, loose-fitting tank, bushy hair and exercising to the classics about crying at your party, that rebel guy and your boyfriend being back? (From where, I am not sure!) If you are like most… these are the 1st images that come to your mind.
When I hear the name Richard Simmons a different image comes to mind. I think of a dark haired, polished, business man dressed in a conservative suit answering labor law questions as quickly and easily as if he were reciting the alphabet. I think about the man considered to be the “guru” of California Labor Law. He is one man that knows intimately how the ever changing California Labor Laws pertain to wrongful discharge, wage and hour issues, employee discrimination, employee discipline and termination, employee benefits, personnel policies and COBRA. Are you familiar with Richard J. Simmons the Attorney? If not, here is just a little about his background. Richard J. Simmons received his B.A., summa cum laude, from the University of Massachusetts, where he was a Commonwealth Scholar and graduated in the Phi Kappa Phi Honor Society. He received his J.D. from Boalt Hall School of Law at UC Berkeley where he was Editor-in-Chief of the Industrial Relations Law Journal. He is currently a Partner in the law firm of Sheppard, Mullin, Richter & Hampton LLP in Los Angeles (www.sheppardmullin.com.)Mr. Simmons was appointed by the California Industrial Welfare Commissions (Yep, think IWC Wage Orders... that long document posted in your break room that no one ever reads) as a member of the 1987, 1984 and 1982 Minimum Wage Boards for the State of California . He is a member of the California State Bar and has been a lecturer at graduate labor law courses presented by UCLA and USC. He has appeared as an authority on labor law on the CBS Evening News, NBC News as well as radio and TV talk shows… and now he is coming to San Diego . On August 12th , the San Diego Employers Association is proud to present a day with Richard J. Simmons, Esq. Think that a day listening to a guy with all this education and experience would be snoozfest??? Think Again. Richard J. Simmons is a dynamic speaker that engages the audience. He allows the audience to ask questions throughout the presentation. His answers to their questions are full of energy, humor, and examples of what not to do. There will be no sleeping at this Labor Law Conference!! Oh, and think you are going to attend and take notes diligently on every word of wisdom he breathes? Bring your pen… but don’t be surprised when your notebook has only a word or two scribbled on it at the end of the 7 ½ hours… trying to take notes of his fast paced, information packed lecture, in between your chuckling is about impossible. But, don’t think that just because he is wildly entertaining that you are not getting good information… You will leave with more knowledge about Wage & Hour Developments, Employee Discrimination Developments, Supreme Court Decisions, Wrongful Discharge, Personnel Policies, COBRA Updates and the Obama Administration than you can shake a stick at.
