The Labor Department reported that the U.S. unemployment rate rose to 9.7% in August. Twenty-seven states and the District of Columbia posted increases in their unemployment rates last month, while rates remained unchanged in seven others.
By some estimates, 400,000 long-term unemployed could see their benefits expire by the end of September, rising to 1 million by the end of the year.
