Blog Post: Seeking Job Information for Ex-Offenders
posted Friday, October 2, 2009 9:31 AM
My company works with people from all different walks of life and now I need your help.
Does anyone know of companies that hire ex-offenders? The past several weeks I have been trying to find jobs for some of these folks and it's getting harder and harder. Also do you know of any local organizations or government offices that provide work study or assistance for helping getting ex-offenders back into the work force? Your input would be appreciated!

I do some work in re-entry here in Virginia so I'm familiar with the challenges you face trying to help ex-offenders. In my research I've stumbled upon some like this one at Prisontalk,( http://www.prisontalk.com/forums/showthread.php?t=294627), which I've seen in other places. I can verify some of the employers like Safeway from personal knowledge, as well as fast food, telemarketing and handyman/construction work, and also places like Walmart and Target. This can vary by region however, even for the same company, and with so many people unemployed now, these jobs are even harder to get. We usually recommendation clients look for small or entrepreneurial businesses where they're less likely to be disqualified by background checks and where the owner- as opposed to a rule-bound HR bureaucracy - is the one making the hiring decisions. A really useful site to check out is the National Hire Network (http://www.hirenetwork.org/resource.html),which lists resources and some community organizations that help ex-offenders by state. I noticed there are several in your area, including Strive, which does good work, and could probably give you a better idea of the local job market for ex-offenders. There are also some other links you might find helpful on my blog http://outandemployed.blogspot.com
Hope this helps,
