Blog Post: Fear of Success....Is this you?

posted Thursday, March 13, 2008 10:20 AM

I found a great article at Psychology Today, written by Hara Estroff Marano, about a personal assessment of fears and how to move past them.

She recommends you ask yourself a list of questions about each area of your life.  Here is a sampling of the questions that I related to career.

  • What would happen if I were successful?
  • What would success look like?
  • Who am I afraid of intimidating/hurting if I achieve success?
  • What is lacking in me that keeps me from being successful?
  • What is my biggest fear?
  • Who is more deserving of this success than me?
  • How motivated am I in figuring this out?
  • How will success in this area affect the other parts of my life?
  • How will I feel unworthy/unsatisfied if I find success?

When I looked at the question of who is more deserving and what my biggest fear is, that brought up an “Aha” moment.  It brought to the surface some of the issues related to mixed messages from childhood (see Fear of Success, Origins blog) but I also found that the only person holding me back is me.

Once we recognize where the blocks are, we can see how irrational they are, and change the way we think.  We also can start to accept and appreciate who we are as individuals.

Try it for yourself and see if you don’t find that change is possible!
