In 1886, Richard Sears began the R.W. Sears Watch Company in Minneapolis. As business began to increase, an Indiana lad by the name of Alvah C. Roebuck answered an ad. In 1893 the corporate name of the firm became Sears, Roebuck and Co. In 1905, needing additional capital, Sears for the first time sold common and preferred stock on the open market. The company has been publicly owned ever since.

Sears today, operates 863 mall-based retail stores, most with co-located Sears Auto Centers, and an additional 1,200 retail locations including hardware, tire and battery stores as well as independently owned stores, primarily in smaller and rural markets. The company's services operations include product installation and repair services, service contracts, direct response and selected installed home improvements.

The installed home improvements operations evolved into Sears Home Improvement Products. Sears, Roebuck & Company decided that it needed to find an improved business platform to better meet the demands for installed home improvements. This strategy led to the acquisition of two of America’s largest home improvement companies. The first acquisition was with a company named Spray-Tech, headquartered in the Orlando, FL area. Spray-Tech, Inc. did such an outstanding job for Sears that it won a number of awards from Sears: Crystal Eagle Award for Quality Every Day for three consecutive years; Partners in Progress Awards in 1994, 1995, and 1996, which is only given to 1% of Sears’ 10,000 licensees vendors.

In 1998 Sears, Roebuck & Company reached an agreement with Spray-tech to become a wholly owned subsidiary. In 1999, Sears finalized the addition of another major home improvement company, American Home Improvement Products (AHIP), which had the strategic control of the northwestern and northeastern regions of the United States. The purchase of AHIP led to an eventual merger in January 2001, as a combined wholly owned subsidiary known as Sears Home Improvement Products (a.k.a SHIP).
