PhD in organic or medicinal chemistry with a minimum of 15 years of directly relevant biotechnology or pharmaceutical industry experience.

Summary:

The candidate will have senior level leadership responsibility for multiple internal and/or external research programs within the Chemistry Department at Celgene's San Diego research facility. The candidate will have strong leadership and team management skills, with a demonstrated ability to coordinate and direct the efforts of multiple staff incorporating various scientific skills and disciplines. This position will report to the head of the Chemistry Department and will be a member of the Chemistry Management Team (CMT). The successful candidate will work directly with the project and ED teams, therapeutic area leadership, other research disciplines, and contract research organizations.

Qualifications:

* PhD in chemistry with a minimum of 15 years of relevant drug discovery experience.
* Recognized as leader in medicinal chemistry and the drug discovery.
* Demonstrated track record of delivery of multiple candidates into development.
* Significant project leadership experience.
* Demonstrated ability to implement project and chemistry strategies.
* In depth knowledge of multiple therapeutic areas.
* Experience in Discovery and ED stages of drug discovery.
* Extensive working knowledge of modern medicinal chemistry and drug discovery techniques (FBDD, SBDD, multi-attribute analysis, flexible resourcing models, alternative delivery systems, etc.)
* Experience with oral and non-oral small molecule discovery and development.
* Ability to manage scientific collaborations and contracted research.
* Proven written and oral communication skills.
* Effective team building and teamwork skills.
* Detail-oriented with the ability to identify and implement creative solutions.
* Ability to prioritize and manage time efficiently.
* Previous experience with supervision and mentoring of laboratory, support and scientific staff.

Technical Skills:

* Expert in medicinal chemistry and organic synthesis.

Responsibilities:

* Lead multiple discovery projects in collaboration with the relevant cross functional leadership.
* Manage external collaborations and CRO's.
* Accountable for project success and deliverables.

* Interact directly with partners in chemistry, biochemistry, DMPK, toxicology and ED.
* Set objectives for and manages multiple on-going work activities of moderate to high complexity.
* Manage budget and make resource allocation decisions that affect immediate work group or department.
* Provide leadership within functional group, department and cross-functional focus teams
* Develop and mentor scientists within and beyond functional expertise.
* Functionally supervise and direct the efforts of other staff member(s), providing guidance, instruction, opportunity and coaching

Requirements & Education:

PhD in organic or medicinal chemistry with a minimum of 15 years of directly relevant biotechnology or pharmaceutical industry experience. Candidate must have demonstrated the delivery of multiple compounds into clinical development. Must be a highly flexible, results oriented, independent self-starter who enjoys working in a fast paced dynamic environment.
