Job: Part Time - Animal Caregiver (Level I)

Summary: Provide daily care and enrichment for shelter animals as well as general information to the public. Work closely with both adoption and behavior counselors to insure the best possible adoptions and introductions.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONIBLITIES: Includes the following, however other duties may be assigned.

Complete daily cleaning routines, maintaining assigned area in a clean, organized and professional manner. Provide kennel enrichment, train, and socialize animals in assigned area as time permits.

Monitor the health of shelter animals; follow established procedures if symptoms of illness arise based on the degree of illness or injury.

To assist Behavior Counselor as needed to restrain incoming pets for blood draw and examination. Assist with the temperament testing of new canine arrivals as scheduled.

Work with the Animal Care Supervisor, Director of Animal Services and other staff members to assure the highest of standards in day-to-day shelter operations.

Provide general information to the public on SDHS processes including adoption, relinquishment, medical and behavioral examinations and euthanasia.

Communicate effectively and professionally with co-workers, management and the public at all times.

Promote positive relationships with the general public, volunteers and staff while promoting the Humane Society’s programs, policies and philosophies.

Data entry utilizing the ShelterBuddy software. Attend in-service training, staff and volunteer meetings as required. Wear appropriate, clean uniform and name tag at all times during business hours.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBLITES: No direct supervision but has the responsibility for volunteers working in the animal care and adoption areas.

EDUCATIONS, SKILL, EXPERIENCE: High school graduate or equivalent. Must be able to complete Level I training, provided by the society, within 6 months of employment. Working knowledge of animal breeds, general care and behavior related information helpful. Have the ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing. Valid CA Drivers License required.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS: Individual will frequently be required to stand, walk, sit, talk and hear. Must be able to lift, push or pull 50 pounds for situations of restraining or moving animals and lifting food and animal care supplies. WORK ENVIRONMENT: Will work primarily on-site at animal care facility, with the occasion for off-site special and mobile events. There is a potential of exposure to parasites and infectious diseases that can be carried and transmitted by animals.
