Jobing Description
SUMMARY
Performs a variety of routine, clerical duties while developing a basic knowledge of Underwriting Services procedures and policies.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
• Sort and date all incoming mail to determine destination and arrival date.
• Searches for files and endorsements needed by underwriters.
• Requests, deletes and diaries suspense and uprate letters.
• Orders motor vehicle reports for endorsement requests and renewals.
• Alpha searches for policy numbers on endorsements and checks whether the policy has been issued.
• Keeps track of manual files inventory.
• Log different types of information about the insured’s file, to be turned into supervisor for review.
• Sorts and delivers files that enter the unit, making sure that files are properly routed to an underwriting service specialist’s attention.
• Routes files and paperwork to the appropriate departments.
• Searches for documents, such as Expiration Notices, in microfiche.
• Searches for policies in Affidavit of Mailing.
• Makes certain that unit is properly supplied for efficient performance.
• Processes incoming and outgoing mail.
• Works on the Secondary inventory queue in work flow
• Reviews accident liability decision from claims to ensure policy is rated correctly
• Reviews the New business cross reference report
• Assists customer service with call volume

Qualifications
To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. Demonstrated ability to make decisions and work with minimal supervision

Education or Experience
High school diploma or general education degree (GED), 1 year work experience in insurance related field (i.e. customer service, data entry, claims, etc.) performing at satisfactory level.
Currently pursuing insurance education (INS, CPCU, CA Licensing courses, etc…) and/or college degree

Language Skills
Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals. Ability to write routine reports and correspondence. Ability to speak effectively before groups of customers or employees of the organization.

Mathematical Skills
Ability to add and subtract two digit numbers and to multiply and divide with 10’s and 100’s. Ability to perform these operations, using units of American money and weight measurements, volume and distance.

Reasoning Ability
Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out detailed but uninvolved written and oral instructions. Ability to deal with problems involving a few concrete variables in standardized situations.

Other Skills and Abilities
Familiarity with computers a plus. Ability to work quickly and efficiently.

The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 25 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision and the ability to adjust focus.
