Job: SURGICAL SERVICES ASSISTANT

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Essential Functions:

* Check clients in and out, prepare charts, collect, record and process fees.
* Ask about client’s payment source and give client appropriate payment information based on procedure, pregnancy size, anesthesia, and insurance.
* Answer routine client questions, forward all medical questions to licensed staff and make appropriate referrals.
* Perform routine clerical duties (filing, copying, etc.).
* Demonstrated proficiency in the Agency’s Practice Management System.
* Responsible for the accuracy of client information entered into the Agency’s Practice Management system.
* Perform venipuncture and give injections.
* Perform & record appropriate lab tests & vital signs and alert Licensed Staff to abnormal results.
* Per Agency protocol, provide medically accurate education and counseling to woman on all services including:
* Abortion procedure, informed consent and follow up
* Pregnancy options counseling including abortion, adoption and prenatal
* All FDA approved birth control methods (including emergency contraception)
* Comprehensive sexuality including lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and questioning
STI's (including HIV)

* Prepare charts and client for exam and procedures.
* Per Agency protocol, assist Licensed Staff during abortion procedure (surgical and medication abortion).
* Prepare products of conception for examination.
* Package specimens for outside lab transport.
* Escort client to recovery room.
* Differentiate and demonstrate clean and sterile technique for surgical procedures.
* Maintain knowledge of equipment operation and maintenance including automatic blood pressure cuff, pulse oximeter and thermometer.
* Assist with preparation, cleaning, sterilization and stocking of equipment and rooms.
* Perform non-diagnostic ultrasounds so as to determine gestation dating (trained staff only).
* Attend trainings, staff meetings and in-services to maintain and increase knowledge of protocols and procedures,
* Comply with all safety policies and procedures.

Education: High School diploma or equivalent.

Experience: One year of experience in a health, medical or social services setting.

Other: Must have a CPR card or willingness to obtain one within 60 days of employment.

Demonstrated proficiency in Windows environment and the Internet.

Willingness to work in all areas of the center.

Ability to establish rapport with all clients

Ability to communicate effectively with clients and co-workers of all backgrounds.

Willingness and ability to perform venipuncture and give injections.

Must be able to multi-task and be detail oriented.

Willingness to maintain relevant knowledge about anatomy & physiology, methods of contraception, STDs, pregnancy, adoption, abortion, early prenatal care, counseling techniques, community resources, agency protocols & referral procedures, and all Planned Parenthood programs.

Ability to work in stressful environment.

Must be able to work independently and as part of a team.

Must be able to interpret contract manual & Family P.A.C.T.

guidelines.

Must take initiative and be able to utilize resources effectively.

Some positions require bilingual (Spanish/English).

Some schedules require Saturday and/or evening hours.

Must have willingness and ability to adapt to change including advances in technology.
